Семантика глаголов восприятия запаха

Сегодня, лингвиcты выcказываютcя об отноcительной бедноcти cловаря для передачи обонятельных ощущений.

Одна из оcновных причин такой cкудноcти являетcя иcключительно чувcтвенная природа запаха, которая практичеcки не позволяет передавать его c помощью cредcтв языка. В английском языке очень мало глаголов, которые являются средством выражения запаха (smell, sniff, stink, nose, scent, whiff). Все они объединены общими значениями «издавать запах», «нюхать что-то».

Кроме того, стоит отметить, что все эти глагольные лексемы многозначны и могут обозначать ситуацию восприятия запаха как с позиции субъекта, так и с позиции объекта восприятия запаха.

Для того чтобы выявить семантическую составляющую рассматриваемых нами глаголов, мы обратились к материалам англоязычных словарей: Collins COBUILD Advanced Dictionary, Longman Dictionary of English Language and Culture, Macmillan English Dictionary Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English language. С помощью анализа данных лексикографических источников сформировалось представление о синонимичных и антономичных отношениях данных глаголов обоняния и о ряде семантических свойств, которые они способны передавать.

Глагол Smell дефинируется как:

• 1. Обонять, чувствовать, испытывать запах;
• а) to notice an odor by means of the olfactory sense organs (Webster's Dictionary);
• б) to have or perceive an odor (Macmillan Dictionary);
• в) to breath air in through one’s nose in order to smell something (Longman Dictionary);
• г) to detect or discover something by the faculty of smell (Collins Cobuild);
• — I smelled something like custard, but I could not catch what exactly it was.
• — As soon as I smelt the baking torte inside the house, I immediately realized that I was hungry like a wolf.

Глагол Nose дифинируется как:

Из вышеприведенных дефиниций глаголов обоняния мы видим наличие нескольких синонимичных рядов, которые рассматриваются как как цепочка слов, связанных семантически, в которой каждый член синонимического ряда отличается какимлибо компонентом своего значения от остальных членов ряда, и в то же время совпадает с ними по другому компоненту.

В составе любого синонимического ряда выделяется синонимическая доминанта. Это слово является стержневым, опорным и стилистически нейтральным. Доминанта позволяет сравнить члены синонимического ряда по различающимся компонентам. В нашем случае такой доминантой является глагол smell, он семантически нейтрален и позволяет предавать все семантические характеристики.

Данные глаголы выражения запаха делятся на две синонимичные подгруппы, которые называют положительные (приятные) и отрицательные (неприятные) запахи. Позже, мы рассмотрим как предикаты, заряженные положительной или отрицательной оценкой, участвуют в ситуации восприятия запаха.
