Изучение адаптационных механизмов к кислородной недостаточности и окислительному стрессу необходимо для разработки способов выращивания растений на затопляемых почвах, приёмов защиты от повреждения или повышения устойчивости растений, введения в культуру приспособленных к недостатку кислорода растений.
