В отличие от модельных мембранных систем биологические мембраны состоят также из сложных углеводсодержащих соединений, связанных с мембранными белками. Цитоплазматические мембраны содержат гликопротеины, состоящие из олигосахаридных цепей (например, сиаловые кислоты), присоединенных к белку и играющие значительную роль во взаимодействиях типа «лиганд — рецептор».
