С другой точки зрения, при определенных предположениях тщательный анализ популяции кратеров на поверхности планеты позволяет оценить интенсивность потока возможных ударников с самого времени образования планет. Следовательно, популяции кратеров любого планетарного тела — бесценная историческая летопись всей совокупности ударных процессов, происшедших в течении эволюции Солнечной системы.
