Железо в клетках животных, растений и бактерий является составной частью железо-серных кластеров и простетических гемовых групп важнейших ферментов, участвующих в процессах клеточного дыхания, азотфиксации и фотосинтеза, таких как каталазы, пероксидазы, и митохондриальные и микросомальные цитохромыпереносчики электрона.
